True Story of Repentance in the Bible: King David’s Repentance

By Shuxun, Italy

Whenever King David is mentioned, my mind conjures up the image of when he was in his teens and, by relying on the strength of Jehovah, he used a slingshot to kill the giant Goliath with a stone. Afterward, he went to war, won many battles and did many heroic deeds. It is also recorded in the Bible, however, that when David became the king of Israel, he had Uriah killed and then took his wife Bathsheba. God’s righteous disposition therefore came upon David and, through the prophet Nathan, God spoke to him, saying, “Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house; because you have despised Me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife” (2 Samuel 12:10). King David had sinned, and God had punished him. So why did God thereafter take delight in David and say that David was a man after His own heart? I felt very puzzled by this. In order to figure this out, I sought and prayed to God many times, and I found many verses in the Bible. Through seeking and fellowshiping with my brothers and sisters, I finally found the answer. The pandemic and every other disaster that occurs do so with God’s permission. He uses them to warn mankind, to tell us that we must repent without delay. But what is true repentance? So many believers think that praying and confessing to the Lord more intensely is true repentance, and that God will then save them from the great disasters. But is that really the case? What is the relationship between true repentance and knowledge of oneself?

The Church of Almighty God | Eastern Lightning | True Repentance
Relevant Words of God:

If people’s knowledge of themselves is too shallow, they will find it impossible to solve problems, and their life dispositions simply will not change. It is necessary to know oneself on a profound level, which means knowing one’s own nature: what elements are included in that nature, how these things originated, and where they came from. Moreover, are you actually able to hate these things? Have you seen your own ugly soul and your evil nature? If you are truly able to see the truth about yourself, then you will start to loathe yourself. When you loathe yourself and then practice God’s word, you will be able to forsake the flesh and have the strength to carry out truth without difficulty. Why do many people follow their fleshly preferences? Continue reading “What is the relationship between true repentance and knowledge of oneself?”

How can one achieve true repentance?

The Church of Almighty God | Eastern Lightning | True Repentance
Relevant Words of God:

For a long time, people who believe in God have all been earnestly hoping for a beautiful destination, and all of God’s believers hope that good fortune will suddenly come to them. They all hope that before they know it, they will find themselves peacefully seated at one place or another in heaven. But I say that these people, with their lovely thoughts, have never known whether they are qualified to receive such good fortune that falls down from heaven or even to sit on a seat there. You, at present, have a good knowledge of yourselves, yet you still hope to escape the disasters of the last days and the hand of the Almighty when He punishes the evil ones. It seems as though having sweet dreams and wanting things just how they like is a common feature of all people whom Satan has corrupted, and not some stroke of genius by any lone individual. Even so, I still wish to put an end to these extravagant desires of yours, as well as your eagerness to gain blessings. Continue reading “How can one achieve true repentance?”

What is true repentance? Is it true repentance only to pray to God and admit one’s sins?

The Church of Almighty God | Eastern Lightning | True Repentance
Relevant Words of God:

Every person, to a greater or lesser extent, has transgressed. When you do not know something is a transgression, you regard it with a hazy state of mind, or perhaps you still cling to your own opinions, practices, and ways of understanding—but, one day, whether through fellowship with your brothers and sisters or by God’s revelation, you learn this thing is a transgression, an offense against God. What will your attitude be then? Will you still be holding on, reasoning, arguing, hewing to your own ideas, believing that what you are doing accords with the truth? This involves your attitude toward God. With what attitude did David regard his transgressions? (Remorse.) Remorse—he would no longer commit them. So, what did he do? He prayed asking God to punish him: “If I make this mistake again, may God punish me and cause me to die!”

Story of Repentance: Gaining Inspiration From David’s Repentance

Two thousand years ago, the Lord Jesus said: “Repent you: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 4:17). Which is to say, we should confess our sins and repent before God if we want to enter the kingdom of heaven. After confessing previous sins, such sins will be forgiven. We will no longer sin but repent and be born again. This is repentance. At that time, the Lord Jesus taught us to confess our sins and repent, not to commit sins or do evil, but to deny ourselves, take up the cross, and follow Him. And He also required us to love Him with all our heart, soul and mind, to love others as ourselves, to be humble, tolerant and patient, to forgive others seventy times seven times, and so on. These are the ways for man to repent. But what we can’t deny is that even though our sins have been forgiven, our sinful nature still exists; we are unable to practice what the Lord requires of us, and live in a constant situation of committing sins and confessing them. Look at our actual situation: We often tell lies, we can envy and hate others in our hearts that are filled with greed and evil thoughts, and we can also follow the worldly trends and cling to wealth. Especially when we encounter trials or disasters, we can complain against, judge and even betray the Lord.
